"If in one hundred years I am only known as the man who invented Sherlock Holmes, then I will have considered my life a failure."

--Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Almost everyone knows about Arthur Conan Doyle as people know about Sherlock Holmes, nevertheless, not everybody knows that the father of the famous detective didn't like his own creation at all. As a doctor who didn't earn enough money, Mr. Doyle wrote the story of Sherlock Holmes at first just for a living. Ironically, the first book of the series called "A Study in Scarlet" was an immediate success, and he had no choice but kept writing more books to get the wealth.

After more works of Sherlock Holmes followed, Doyle started to get tired of Holmes, he even said that "Sherlock Holmes takes my mind from better things". Therefore, Doyle killed Holmes in the story "The Final Problem", in which the detective plunged to his death with his archenemy Professor Moriaty (actually I like him very much haha) into the Reichenbach Fall.

Unfortunately, the movement of killing Sherlock Holmes made the readers of a magnificent number go MAD. Under the pressure of the angry British citizens, the reluctant Conan Doyle let Holmes return in the story "The Adventure of the Empty House", and continued publishing more books from the series. Eventually, Mr. Doyle completed 56 short stories and 4 novels of Sherlock Holmes in a total.

Now let's talk about the TV series!!!

The two editors of BBC Sherlock-- Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss were both crazy fans of Sherlock Holmes, their enthusiasm made them come up with the idea to lift Holmes out of history and make him a modern-day detective. But, was there really a place for a modern-day Sherlock Holmes? How could he fit in when TVs had already filled with various sorts of cop shows?

Mark Gatiss
Steven Moffat

"Exactly", says Moffat. "Doyle effectively created the CSI, forensic procedural format with the character of Holmes. So what would make him stand out, now that his methods are more commonplace? In the end, it came down to a simple fact: he would still be the cleverest man in the room. He would still be a genius."

And it proved that Mr. Moffat was right. As soon as the first episode "A Study in Pink", adapted from A Study in Scarlet, was out, it made a huge hit with an audience of 9.23 million. After the three episodes of Season 1 were broadcast, the audience kept asking for more: "Why were there only three episodes?" This was just like the time when the first book of Sherlock Holmes was published back in the 19th century, announcing that SHERLOCK HOLMES IS BACK!

  1. Wow!!! Your article really amazes me!
Much to my surprise, Conan Doyle didn't like his work at all because it's no doubt that Sherlock Holmes is a charming figure and that Doyle seemed to have devoted himself into the novels.
Besides, the TV series seem to be cool! It is really great idea to create a modern version of Sherlock Holmes. I anticipate your following introduction.

    1. Thank u soooo much ><
      I'll try my best~~!!
In fact, Doyle once said that he considered himself as Dr. Watson, not Holmes.
He had put his self image in the character Watson, you can find that Watson was a doctor just like Doyle, and although Watson wasn't that smart as Holmes, he had many good personalities such as loyalty, compassion, generosity and so on.
In contrast, as a genius, Holmes had a lot of weird characteristics, that he was a junky and heavy smoker, he usually didn't care about others(perhaps the only person he cared about was Watson XD), and sometimes he seemed to have no emotion at all..........

  2. Wow, that is interesting.
Watson had a noble characteristic in deed.
Although Holmes was too rational, I trust that most of people admire Holmes more than Watson. XD

    1. Yep I assume that Holmes has more fans, but just so I know, there were a majority people who loved Watson among my classmates who had watched this show XDD
perhaps it's because sometimes Sherlock just behaved too awkwardly :P
